The Missing Piece in Addiction Recovery: Reprogramming Your Nervous System

Recovery is heavy work. You sit in circles, you share your story, and you do the cognitive behavioral work to understand your triggers. But what happens when you understand your trauma in your head, but your body still feels like it’s fighting for its life?

Many people in recovery eventually hit a wall of "talk therapy fatigue." You can’t always think your way out of stress. We have learned that sustainable sobriety requires more than just a mindset shift—it requires a regulated physical body.

Our Personal 'Why'

At SomaYama® BREATH, we know this journey intimately. I (Norm) am 11 years sober, so we deeply understand the daily dedication required for lasting recovery. But we have also witnessed the devastating side of this disease. Last year, our youngest son lost his mother to her 30-year battle with alcoholism after she had attended rehab twice.

That heartbreaking loss highlighted an urgent, deeply personal mission for us: to provide highly effective, body-based tools that can bridge the gap in lasting recovery.

The Science: Why the Body Stays Stuck

Addiction and alcoholism often develop when the nervous system becomes stuck in survival states like anxiety, overwhelm, or emotional shutdown. When your body is trapped in this constant "fight-or-flight" loop, cravings aren't just a lack of willpower—they are deeply physiological. Your nervous system is screaming for a way to self-soothe.

To find lasting peace, you don't just need to change your habits; you need to change your internal environment.

The Somatic Shift: Breathe Your Way Back to Balance

This is exactly what SomaYama® Somatic Breathwork is designed to do. It is a powerful physiological reset for your nervous system.

  • No Talk Therapy Required: By using guided, rhythmic breathing patterns, we help you bypass the conscious mind entirely.

  • Active Release: Instead of talking through your struggles, your body actively discharges stored trauma, "survival energy," and daily overwhelm.

  • Reconnect: Drop out of your head, reduce your cravings, and finally feel safe in your own skin.

A Safe, Trauma-Informed Container

We recognize that somatic breathwork is a deep and powerful process intended for personal growth and nervous system regulation. Because we blend the heart of recovery with clinical standards, our sessions are rigorously trauma-informed. We maintain strict safety protocols and contraindications—such as screening for cardiovascular history or a history of seizures —because the rapid shifts in breathing directly interact with the body's blood pressure and chemistry. You are held in a highly secure, actively monitored space from the first breath to the last.

A Tool You Can Use Right Now: The "Focus Box Breath"

We believe in equipping you with tangible tools you can use the moment a craving or trigger hits. If you are feeling overwhelmed today, try this simple "Rescue Breath" to reverse your fight-or-flight response:

  1. Inhale for 4 seconds.

  2. Hold for 4 seconds.

  3. Exhale for 4 seconds.

  4. Hold for 4 seconds.

(Repeat this cycle for 3 to 5 minutes to clear mental fog and physically calm down).

Healing doesn’t always require talking about it. Sometimes, you just need to breathe your way back to balance.
